Madeline Bertrand County Park is south of Niles, MI in Berrien County, about an hour from Kalamazoo. The park runs along the Saint Joseph River to the Indiana border where it adjoins St. Patrick's County Park. Hiking trails loop around the park, offering attractive views of the river. The basic loop has three variations, ranging from 1.2 to 2.3 miles. The trails are well maintained and clearly marked. The trails are open for skiing during the winter (with rentals available). The green loop is open to bikes during the summer.
The most popular feature of the park seems to be its 18 hole disc golf course. The visitor center offers dozens of colorful discs for sale.
I teach economics at Kalamazoo College. My wife is also an economist. We were on sabbatical in Europe for the 2014-15 academic year. (Salamanca, Spain, followed by Oxford, UK.) We were in Uruguay for the 2006-7 academic year.
